-- a quote from one of the best home room teachers I work with, shouted at a group of 5th graders on a regular basis

The first time this lovely teacher said this to her ultra-eager class in our English lesson, I think my mouth fell open and I probably gave her a pretty befuzzled and bewildered look...

What in the world was she trying to say?!?!?

Explanation (as demonstrated by the students immediately following her command in the floor of the classroom):

In Japanese, there isn't really a sound for "si". So, "si" is naturally replaced by the closest Japanese sound -- "SHI"....

...which unfortunately transforms "SIT! SIT! PLEASE SIT!" into "SHIT! SHIT! PLEASE SHIT!"

This is definitely one of those great arguments for practicing good pronunciation.
