The Japanese High School Girls' Uniform
Japanese high school girls wear skirts that are as short or shorter than American cheerleading skirts to school every day -- even in the winter when there is four feet of snow on the ground. They also wear these weird long socks that they keep up at a midcalf height using special "long sock GLUE". Shoes make no difference in the outfit... sometimes running shoes like these or sometimes penny loafers. And the outfit would not be complete without two other essentials: a Louis Vuitton handbag and a cell phone, which she was, of course, text messaging on as I took her photo on the train.
Only in Japan.... ....

Japanese Vending Machines
In Japan, you can buy ANYTHING from vending machines. The more normal products range from hot canned coffees to green tea and french fries... and the "unheard of at home" vending machine varieties include cold beer, cigarettes, and pornography.... in VENDING MACHINES!! Unbelievable!
This beer vending machine is on the street to my Japanese tutor's house... Only in Japan.....
Japanese English
Japanese people like the look of English letters. It's cool to wear English, even if you have no idea what it says (much the same as how we might wear Chinese characters on a shirt without knowing what they say -- WATCH OUT!).
So, I've seen little elementary school students wearing shirts with "ALCOHOLIC!" printed across the front and grown men wearing shirts proclaiming them to be a "GODDESS." You really never know what you are going to see...
This is a bag is a classic example...Megan, Janette and I found this "Planter's Cocktail Peanuts" bag in a shop, but... well... you can read it.
