"Clay County [Courthouse] employees had an unpleasant surprise when they reported to work on Monday morning.

FLEAS. Lots of fleas. So many they had to abandon the building.

By the noon hour most employees tried to finish what work they could while an exterminator went to work trying to rid the building of the pests.

Officials said a combination of squirrels that live in the courthouse dome and cats that live under the building probably contributed to the fleas making their home in the seat of the county government.

Two county officials missed out on the excitement. County Clerk Kay Hutchinson and County Judge Kenneth Liggett had traveled to a scheduled post-legislative conference in Austin...."

Accordin' to my momma, the Wichita Falls Times Record News ran the story the next day... followed by the Dallas Morning News the following day... and then, two days later, it ran in the New York Times...

So now, my town's got sumthun to be famous for: We most certainly know how to publicize our flea infestations...
