A fast funny story to share:
Today was my one day of junior high per week ... the dreaded day... uggg... But, I have a new Japanese team teacher who decided two weeks ago that the kids needed English names. And she apparently didn't give them any suggestions of English names and just told them to pick something.
And the kids don't really know any English names aside from Jennifer and Carlo (the two American teachers they have met), so they just picked words they knew. So today, I got the class role of my students' new names:
Bus
Apple
Pear
Boy
Jeep
I
Nelson
Micky (a girl, who apparently likes Micky Mouse)
Arien (meaning Alien -- Japanese don't hear a difference between the R sound and the L sound)
Orivia (same L and R problem)
Femace (a French airplane, they tell me, but would that really make it an ENGLISH name??)
Beauty
Beast (both Beauty and Beast are girls)
Bush (named after our ever-so-famous President)
So I was having a little bit of trouble calling on students in class today without laughing. Obviously. "Hey BEAST, what's the answer?" ...
So now I have gone from teaching in Mexico, where all of my students have 4 names, to Japan where my students chose to be named after fruits, modes of transport, and Disney characters.
Giggles,
: ) Jennifer
