My students in Mexico spoke great English... so great that I think I spoke only about 10 words of Spanish the whole semeter in class solely for shock effect that "OH MY GOD! The MISS just said a word in SPANISH!" But, there were a few times that my students gave me a few great giggles:
1. Picture a conscientious 16-year-old student cautiously raising his hand to ask an extremely polite question of the Miss:
"MISS, I'm sorry... I don't mean to MOLEST you, but..."
My eyes bugged out of my head. "You don't mean to MOLEST ME??? WHAT??????"
Light bulb: the verb 'molestar' in spanish = 'to bother' in English. The question was "Miss, I don't mean to BOTHER you" but, well... we had a little discrete definition of the word molest in English.
2. One Friday afternoon, a girl wished me a happy and fun weekend by saying:
"Miss, have a great weekend, you know... do the the wild thing!"
I suppose probably not every unmarried American teacher gets told by her students that she should do "The Wild Thing" over the weekend. Giggles.
